Chronology

The order the suras were revealed, according to whom. The muṣḥaf is not arranged in that order, and the schemes that try to recover it disagree.

The Qur'an is not arranged in the order it is said to have been revealed. It runs roughly from longest sura to shortest — and not even strictly that, since sura 8 is longer than sura 9 and al-Fātiḥah opens the book despite being short. Recovering the order of revelation is therefore a reconstruction, and the reconstructions differ.

One verified scheme. This section compares orderings, and comparison needs at least two. What is shown below is a single ordering, not a consensus, and the absence of a second column is a statement about what has been verified rather than about what scholars agree on.

The Cairo 1924 order reproduces the traditional order attributed to Ibn ʿAbbās — it is that order printed, not an independent confirmation of it. Counting them as two witnesses would manufacture an agreement out of one source.

The revelation order printed in the 1924 Cairo mushaf and the de facto standard in modern printings. It is NOT an independent scholarly result: it reproduces the traditional order attributed to Ibn Abbas, which is why this file does not carry that list as a second scheme. Verified 114/114 against Tanzil's table (from al-Zanjani, Tarikh al-Qur'an) on 2026-09-17, which also independently confirmed the two corrections applied in ImportStudyData (sura 69 -> 78, sura 47 -> 95). Confirmed a third time on 2026-09-17 against the traditional column of quran-sura-chronology.md: 114/114.
