The base text: Tanzil, Ḥafṣ, unchanged
The Arabic shown on every reading page is the Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim Uthmani text from the Tanzil Project (CC BY 3.0). We show it exactly as published, without correction, normalisation or re-spelling, as the Tanzil terms require. Verse numbering on this site is Ḥafṣ-relative. Where another transmission numbers a verse differently, both numbers are shown.
Our difference layers
Everything we add on top of the base text is our own work. That includes word differences between transmissions (Shuʿba, Qālūn, Warsh, al-Bazzī, Qunbul, al-Dūrī, al-Sūsī and others), the Differences catalogue, the abrogation (naskh) claims, repetitions and the figures. It is kept in separate layers so that it never alters the Tanzil text.
- Cross-checked against at least two sources. No difference is published on one source alone. Reading differences are derived from the Quranpedia.net qiraat index and confirmed against Corpus Coranicum (CC BY-SA 4.0). Reviewed entries are checked against classical reference works such as al-Dānī’s al-Taysīr and Ibn al-Jazarī’s al-Nashr, and cited by page.
- Every claim is attributed. Each row names its source. Where authorities disagree, each one is shown side by side rather than merged into a single verdict.
- Held until checked. Entries that do not yet have two agreeing sources are kept back from public pages until they do.
- Corrections are logged. When we find an error in our own data or in an upstream source, the correction is made in a documented, repeatable step, not by hand-editing the text.
Disclaimer: scholarly study, not a religious ruling
TheQuran.com is a scholarly, primary-source resource. It reports what the texts and the classical authorities say and where they differ. It does not issue fatwas or religious rulings, does not tell anyone how to recite or practise, and is not a substitute for a qualified teacher. Inclusion of a claim, for example that a verse was abrogated, means a cited source made that claim. It does not mean we endorse it. Translations are aids to understanding, not the Qur'an itself.
We aim for accuracy, but errors are possible. See the Terms of Use.
Found a mistake?
Corrections from readers make this better. Please use Report an error in a verse/difference and include the reference (for example 2:255) and your source if you have one.
