Al-An‘ām 6:68

The verse

6:68
And when thou seest those who meddle with Our revelations, withdraw from them until they meddle with another topic. And if the devil cause thee to forget, sit not, after the remembrance, with the congregation of wrong-doers. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

Muhammad was socializing with a group of individuals from the Quraysh in order

to invite them to the Islāmic faith. What he got from them in return was mockery of

the Qur’ān. It was then that this verse came down, commanding Muhammad to stay

away from anyone who objects to the Qur’ān.

The Qur’ān does not detail the exact nature of this mockery. But what is apparent in

this story is that the people of the Quraysh, who were especially famous for their linguistic abilities, had clearly mocked the Qur’ān. Based on the Islāmic argument that the Qur’ān is unrivaled in its eloquent language, they should instead have been awestruck by it.

Scholars note that this verse required Muhammad to withdraw from the people of

the Quraysh because they were mocking the Qur’ān. But the verb used in the verse is

“plunge,” which does not indicate mockery or ridicule.

The verb “plunge” is used again in the very same verse that demands of Muhammad

to withdraw from the Quraysh “until they plunge deeply into some other discourse”.

If we are to accept the view of the scholars that the meaning of this phrase, “those who

plunge deeply into the discussion of our signs,” is also “those who ridicule our verses,” then the meaning of the verse would be “stay away from those who ridicule the Qur’ān until they ridicule other matters.”

However, it is doubtful that this interpretation is the intended meaning.

It seems the real issue in this verse is that when Muhammad was unable to argue

with or persuade his critics when discussing controversial matters, he would withdraw

and stay away from them. It is believed that Muhammad used avoidance as a coping

mechanism in a similar situation when a Jewish rabbi wanted to discuss the accusations

that he had directed toward Muhammad. Muhammad chose not to engage the rabbi in

the difficult matter. (See the comment regarding this incident on Q 5.15).

So the eloquent people of the Quraysh, in whose language the Qur’ān is written,

criticized the Qur’ān, and, therefore, Muhammad decided to stay away from them.

Was staying away from them evidence in favor of Muhammad or evidence against him?

The verse then instructs Muhammad that, if he ever sat with them and the devil made

him forget what he was supposed to say, he should get up and remove himself from

them until he remembered. This part of the verse admits Muhammad’s forgetfulness.

(See the forgetfulness phenomenon in the comment on Q 2.106).
