Āl-‘Imrān 3:144

The verse

3:144
Muhammad is but a messenger, messengers (the like of whom) have passed away before him. Will it be that, when he dieth or is slain, ye will turn back on your heels? He who turneth back on his heels doth no hurt to Allah, and Allah will reward the thankful. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

This verse was unknown to the Muslims of Muhammad’s day, even to Muhammad’s friends. The account of its revelation was recorded by the scholar al-Qurtubī:

When Muhammad died and the news spread, ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattāb went to Muhammad’s house and declared that the death was not real, but that Muhammad was in a coma. He warned that he would cut the neck of (slaughter) anyone who said Muhammad was dead. In the meantime, Abū Bakr arrived at Muhammad’s house, inspected the body, then came out to the people that were gathered. Among this group was ‘Umar Ibn al-Khattāb, who was threatening and warning.

Abū Bakr quieted the chaos and announced to the people the news of Muhammad’s death. In order to emphasize that Muhammad’s death was real and to refute ‘Umar’s statement, he quoted two Qur’ānic passages on announcing the death:

Mohammed is but an apostle; apostles have passed away before his time. what if he dies or is killed, will ye retreat upon your heels? (Q 3.144)

We never made for any mortal before thee immortality; what, if thou shouldst die, will they live on for aye? Every soul shall taste of death! (Q 21.34-35) These verses convinced ‘Umar of Muhammad’s death, and he fell to the ground in astonishment. However, since Muslims never knew of these verses but heard them for the first time from Abū Bakr, ‘Umar was not the only one who was surprised by the existence of these verses. According to the sources, people started reciting Q 3.144 “as if it was never sent down before that day.”

Question: How could it be proper that prominent Companions of Muhammad had no knowledge of these verses? Does this not suggest that when Abū Bakr saw the dangerous political situation, he decided to fabricate a Qur’ānic portion to calm the fear and anxiety of Muhammad’s followers?
