Āl-‘Imrān 3:133
The verse
And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil); — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
This verse identifies the width of paradise, “a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth….” (Yusuf Ali trans. Q 3.133) Yet another verse mentions that the width of paradise is the width of one heaven: “...and a Garden (of Bliss), the width whereof is as the width of heaven and earth” (Yusuf Ali trans. Q 57.21).
The scholars were questioned on the subject of the length of paradise. Some of the scholars ignored this question, while others considered the distance mentioned in the Qur’ān to be metaphorical in nature, reflecting the vastness of paradise and not its exact measurements. However, a third group of scholars saw a divine mystery in this verse, as narrated by Ibn ‘Abbās: “The heavens and earth are attached to each other as pieces of cloth are laid down and attached to each other. This is the width of paradise and only Allah knows its length.” It was said that Muhammad’s opponents ridiculed this verse by asking him, “Then where is hell?”
Which opinion is the correct one? Is the width of paradise equal to that of all the heavens and earth, or equal to the width of one heaven only? The above opinions can be expressed as equations:
• Paradise = The heavens + the earth
• Paradise = One heaven + the earth
• Paradise = One heaven
Question: Which of these equations is correct?
Note: A Mu‘tazilite group said that paradise and hell are not created yet. They believe that Allah will start creating paradise and hell after the end of the universe.
