An-Nūr 24:4

The verses

24:4
And those who accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses, scourge them (with) eighty stripes and never (afterward) accept their testimony - They indeed are evil-doers - — Marmaduke Pickthall
24:5
Save those who afterward repent and make amends. (For such) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

The text declares that people who accuse “chaste women” without presenting evidence for the accusation are transgressors, but Allah will forgive them if they repent. This declaration contradicts another verse, Q 24.23, which states that there is no forgiveness for the one who falsely accuses a chaste woman: “Verily, those who cast imputations on chaste women who are negligent but believing shall be cursed in this world and the next; and for them is mighty woe”.

Muslim exegetes state that the persons addressed in Q 24.23 are those who do not rescind their accusations. Others hold that the verse is personally directed at everyone who accused ‘Ā’isha of adultery. Other exegetes also state that anyone who besmirches the reputation of any of the wives of Muhammad will receive eternal torment. However, nothing explicit in the text of these verses supports the opinion that these verses address particular situations. As a result, the contradiction between verses 4 and 5 remains unresolved.
