Al-Isrā’ 17:60
The verse
And (it was a warning) when we told thee: Lo! thy Lord encompasseth mankind, and We appointed the sight which We showed thee as an ordeal for mankind, and (likewise) the Accursed Tree in the Qur'an. We warn them, but it increaseth them in naught save gross impiety. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The text in this verse contains two issues:
Word definition (“the vision”)
The verse states that Muhammad’s vision became “a cause of sedition unto men.” Muslim exegetes offer different meanings for “the vision”:
A true vision shown to Muhammad on his Night Journey and not a vision in a dream.
A dream shown to Muhammad by Allah, concerning the destiny of the Quraysh misbelievers at the Battle of Badr.
A vision (occurring the year of the Treaty of hudaybīya) shown to Muhammad, informing him that if he did not enter Mecca because of the truce agreement, he would enter it later.
A vision, attributed to Sa‘īd Ibn al-Musayīb, where Muhammad saw “Banī Umayya jumping on his podium like a monkey, [a behavior] which he disliked”..
Word definition (“the cursed tree” )
According to the verse, “the cursed tree” is “a cause of sedition” as well. Amplification of the tree’s meaning is provided by the following exegetical opinions:
The cursed tree is the zaqqūm tree, and it is said that eating it is what is cursed. It is said that the cursed tree in the Qur’ān represents the Jews. This interpretation is one of the examples of racism in Islamic thought that denigrates and vilifies another group of people. Islamic commentaries leave the reader even more confused as the variety of interpretations for both terms makes the text even more complicated.
