An-Naḥl 16:76

The verse

16:76
And Allah coineth a similitude: Two men, one of them dumb, having control of nothing, and he is a burden on his owner; whithersoever he directeth him to go, he bringeth no good. Is he equal with one who enjoineth justice and followeth a straight path (of conduct)? — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

In trying to clarify the incapability of idols, Islamic commentators suggest that this verse compares an idol to a mute man. Al-Ţabarī explains that just as a mute man is a burden to his family, so is the idol a burden to his owner because it needs to be serviced and maintained:

[Just as the mute] who is unable to do a thing, who is a complete [burden] on his masters, his cousins, and others, “wherever he [the overseer] directs him [the mute], he [the mute] does not bring good”…[and] does understand nor is understandable—just like the idol. It does not understand what is said to it, in order to be given charge to fulfill the demand of the one who asked of it, nor does it speak so it can command and forbid.

Comparing a useless idol that is a burden to its owner to the mute person and saying that the mute person is a burden to those around him is an insult against a group that suffers from the inability to speak. Not only does the verse insult this group, but it also makes Allah himself the initiator of the insult when it ascribes to him this comparison of an idol to the mute person.
