Al-Ḥijr 15:80

The verse

15:80
And the dwellers in Al-Hijr denied (Our) messengers. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

The verse states that the “fellows of El ‘Hajr” (said to be the people of Thamūd) “called the messengers liars” without stating which messenger. Islamic commentators state that this messenger is Šālih.

To justify the plural “messengers” in the text, Islamic commentators offer the following opinions:

One who calls any messenger a liar, calls all of them liars.

The intended “messengers” are Šālih and the believers who were with him.

“Probably the people…denied all the messengers”.

The first opinion is not supported by the context of the verse as it definitely states “messengers” in the plural. The second opinion is weaker than the first; not only is this opinion unsupported by the context of the verse, it also widens the description of “messengers” and applies it to a group of believing followers. The third opinion, which suggests that the people denied all messengers, is purely an assumption, likely given to calm the worries of readers who cannot find a definite answer for the use of “messengers” in the verse.
