Al-Ḥijr 15:72
The verse
By thy life (O Muhammad) they moved blindly in the frenzy of approaching death. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
In this verse Islamic commentators are divided concerning the identity of the addressee into two opinions:
The addressee is Muhammad, and the verse means, “By your life, O Muhammad, your people of the Quraysh are ‘in their intoxication blindly wandering on”.
The angels are addressing Lot, saying, “in their intoxication blindly wandering on”.
These two explanations show that in this verse the identity of the speaker and the addressee is unclear or inexplicable. The exegetical difference concerning this verse leads to very dissimilar images and discredits the claim that the Qur’ān is “in plain Arabic language” (Q 26.195).
Question: Where is the eloquence and clarity in a verse where the subject and the object are not clearly defined?
