And We have guarded it from every outcast devil, — Marmaduke Pickthall
Save him who stealeth the hearing, and them doth a clear flame pursue. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The Qur’ān explains in these verses an astronomical phenomenon: the shooting star. According to Islamic commentators, verse 17 states that the lower heaven has been kept away from every devil except the one who eavesdrops; he is followed by a clear shooting star. According to the Islamic traditional view (as related by Ibn ‘Abbās), the devils ascend “in droves to eavesdrop. Then the giant among them gets higher and a shooting star is thrown at him.” It hits him, and, as he smolders, the rest of the devils come to him. He tells them what he has heard, and they, in turn, tell the diviners.
Ibn ‘Abbās also relates that the shooting stars do not kill but “burn, muddle, and cut without killing”.
Ibn ‘Abbās further explains that the devils were once able to penetrate the heavens; however, when Jesus was born, they were prohibited from three heavens. When Muhammad was born, they were prohibited from the rest of the heavens. Therefore, every time a devil wants to eavesdrop, he is subject to having shooting stars thrown at him. This is the scientific explanation provided by the Qur’ān for the shooting star. (See the critical analysis of Q 67.5. Arabic text of this item
