Al-Ḥijr 15:10
The verses
We verily sent (messengers) before thee among the factions of the men of old. — Marmaduke Pickthall
And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. — Marmaduke Pickthall
Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty: — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The text contains an address to Muhammad, stating that every messenger who came “before thee” (verse 10) was “mocked” (verse 11). The following text (verse 12) states that mockery is “put” by Allah into the hearts of misbelievers. Al-Ţabarī interprets this verse as “we do the same in the hearts of the idolaters from among your [ Muhammad’s] people”. These verses imply that mockery is part of Allah’s plan; he puts in human hearts misguidance and blasphemy, mockery and idolatry. Thus, al-Qurţubī used these verses to counter Muslim scholars who would espouse free will.
Question: If Allah plants mockery of religion in the hearts of some, how is it that he could justly make them pay for their misbelief?
Arabic text of this item
يوجد في النص خطاب لمحمد يقول: إن كل رسول جاء قبلك (آية 10) قد تعرض للاستهزاء (آية 11). ثم يتابع النص قائلاً: إن الميل إلى الاستهزاء يسلكه [يدخله] الله في قلوب غير المؤمنين، و«كذلك نَفْعلُ ذلك في قلوب مشركي قومك [يا محمد]».
تفيد الآية 12 أن الاستهزاء جاء بخطة الله. فهو الذي يدخل الضلال والكفر، والاستهزاءَ والشركَ. ولهذا قال القرطبي إن في الآية رداً على كل من قال بحرية الإرادة من المسلمين.
والسؤال: إذا كان الله يزرع في قلوب البعض الاستهزاء، فما وجه عدالة محاسبتهم عليه؟
