Yūsuf 12:93
The verse
Go with this shirt of mine and lay it on my father's face, he will become (again) a seer; and come to me with all your folk. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
It is not clear in the verse how the shirt would return sight to Jacob. The Islamic literature provides an attempt to explain this mystery by stating that the shirt originally belonged to Abraham. It was sent to him from heaven, from al-Janna, while Abraham was in the furnace during his trial by ordeal under Nimrod. (For the story of Abraham and Nimrod, see the critical analysis of Q 2.258). The shirt was later passed down to Isaac and then to Jacob, who “inserted the shirt into a silver tube and hung it around Joseph’s neck because he feared that the evil eye might harm him…. [I]n it is the wind of al-Janna. The wind of al-Janna will not fall on a sick or afflicted person without it healing him”.
Notice that the verse never mentions the secret of the shirt. Furthermore, the exegetical literature does not present satisfactory or convincing explanations.
Questions: (1) How is it that this special shirt is not lost during all of Joseph’s trials? (2) How is it that the shirt is not confiscated in jail? (3) The brothers of Joseph must have known the value of the shirt. Why do they not take it away from him before throwing him in the pit? (4) Is this shirt different from the shirt that is taken from Joseph and dipped in the blood of deception? (5) If this shirt has such a healing power, why is there no mention of any other use of it throughout the years?
