Hūd 11:34
The verse
My counsel will not profit you if I were minded to advise you, if Allah's will is to keep you astray. He is your Lord and unto Him ye will be brought back. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
In this verse, Noah declares his inability to convince his people to believe if Allah’s will is to lead them into sin.
Based on this verse, al-Qurṭubī rejects the opinion of some Muslim scholars who believe that humans are free to choose:
…to “lure you” means to mislead you, which implies that the Mu‘tazila, al-Qadarīya [Islamic theological groups], and those who agree with them are wrong. They all claim that Allah…does not want the disobedient to disobey, or the unbeliever to disbelieve, or the tempted to be seduced. He [the individual] does that, but Allah does not want that…[Allah] is the one who guides and leads astray.
Therefore, the verse denies people the freedom to choose and characterizes God as a seducer and misleader of people.
This conclusion is unacceptable as the will to seduce is a result of psychological emotions, which are particular to humans and not the nature of God.
