Yūnus 10:20
The verse
And they will say: If only a portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Then say, (O Muhammad): The Unseen belongeth to Allah. So wait! Lo! I am waiting with you. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse shows that the Quraysh wished Muḥammad would perform a miracle, sent down from Allah, as evidence of his prophetic claims. Muḥammad responded that such a demand is among the unseen things that only Allah knows, adding, “but wait ye for a while, verily, I with you am one of those who wait!”
Clearly, Muḥammad’s response did not quench the thirst of the Quraysh; otherwise, the Quraysh would have believed the claim of Muḥammad. The Quraysh must have asked Muḥammad that if he communicated with Allah through the messenger Jibrīl, why was he unable to give them decisive evidence that he was a prophet?
