Al-Furqān 25:44
The verse
Or deemest thou that most of them hear or understand? They are but as the cattle - nay, but they are farther astray? — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse compares the misbelievers to livestock, stating that they are “like the cattle.” Al-Ţabarī explains that “they are not but like animals that do not understand what is said to them nor comprehend”. On the other hand, Q 17.44 states that everything praises Allah: “The seven heavens and the earth celebrate His praises, and all who therein are; nor is there aught, but what celebrates His praise: but ye cannot understand their celebration….”
The problem here is that the text compares the idolaters to the cattle—not from the point of reason and thinking but from the point of faith. Therefore, this comparison is an incorrect simile by Qur’ānic logic. If, according to Q 17.44, every living being on earth will praise, though humans do not understand this praise, how is it that the idolaters are compared unfavorably to the animals who praise?
