Al-Furqān 25:38
The verse
And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and the dwellers in Ar-Rass, and many generations in between. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse mentions “people of ar Rass.” Al-Rass is the name of a well. Regarding the identity of these people, Muslim exegetes offer the following disparate opinions:
The people of the town of Thamūd.
The people of a town in Yamāma.
A “people in Azerbaijan, who killed prophets, so their trees and plants dried up. As a result, they died of hunger and thirst” (in a narrative from Ibn ‘Abbās).
A people of the well al-Rass in Antioch who killed Habīb al-Najjār, who was one of the believers of the people of “Y.S.,” according to other opinions.
The “people of al-Ukhdūd”
Muslim exegetes are so confused regarding the “people of ar Rass” that those who hold the first opinion do not apparently notice that the verse states “‘Âd and Thamûd and the people of ar Rass”. Based on the first opinion, the verse would then state “Ād and Thamūd and the people of Thamūd”, an obvious redundancy.
Historical sources do not mention the people of al-Rass. It appears that Muhammad inserted “people of ar Rass” for possible compositional necessity because this people group is not based on historical reports or oral traditions. This possible insertion is what led the exegetes to offer opinions unsupported by historical records.
