Al-Furqān 25:37
The verse
And Noah's folk, when they denied the messengers, We drowned them and made of them a portent for mankind. We have prepared a painful doom for evil-doers. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse states that the people of Noah “said the apostles were liars'' in the plural, even though the verse is about the people of Noah calling him (in the singular) a liar. Muslim exegetes have attempted to resolve this grammatical problem by offering the following possibilities:The people of Noah were Brahmans who reject all apostles.
The people, by calling Noah a liar, call all other apostles liars. If one calls an apostle a liar, he calls all of them liars.
The plural “apostles” refers to Noah, just like some may say one “rides horses [meaning, one would not ride all the horses at the same time]”.
None of these exegetical attempts to explain the plural use in the verse agree with the context of the verse. However, two prior verses (35 and 36) mention Moses and Aaron. The Qur’ān, following the Torah, informs that the enemies of Moses’ message drowned. Verse 37 refers to the drowning of the people of Noah. Therefore, the common denominator among Moses, Aaron, and Noah is the drowning of the enemies of their missions. If this proposition is true, the missing link would be the pronoun “they.” Inserting this pronoun into the text would resolve the grammatical problem: “and we said, ‘Go ye to the people who say our signs are lies, for we will destroy them with utter destruction". [They] And the people of Noah, when they said the apostles were liars, we drowned them, and we made them a sign for men; and we prepared for the unjust a grievous woe”.
