Al-Furqān 25:3
The verse
Yet they choose beside Him other gods who create naught but are themselves created, and possess not hurt nor profit for themselves, and possess not death nor life, nor power to raise the dead. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse presents an argument regarding the rationality of pagan worship. The verse mocks the faith of idolaters in gods who do not create a thing, unlike Allah the creator. Al-Rāzī explains the verse by stating, “They [the idols] are not creators of things; a god should be able to create and bring into being”. Then, al-Rāzī notes that the verse refutes the worship of the idolaters because the idols they worship do not create anything, commenting, “that [it] shows the one who creates deserves to be worshipped. For, if the servant was a creator, he would have been worshipped as God”. Another Islamic scholar adds an explanation that the name, “the creator,” is only used in reference to Allah. Therefore, the act of creating determines divinity. The argument given here, in the verse, is also found in other verses, such as Q 16.17. (See Q 7.191 and Q 16.20.)
This determination leads back to the dilemma discussed in Q 3.49, where the verse states that Jesus created a bird out of clay. These arguments stand as evidence to the contradiction within Qur’ānic thought regarding the identity of Jesus. If Islam considers Jesus a prophet but on a lower rank than Muhammadd, how is it that Jesus possesses the power to create, when it is a characteristic unique to Allah alone in the Muslim mind-set?
Arabic text of this item
