Ṭā-Hā 20:96
The verse
He said: I perceived what they perceive not, so I seized a handful from the footsteps of the messenger, and then threw it in. Thus my soul commended to me. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
According to Muslim exegetes, what is mentioned in the verse is that the Samaritan saw “the footprint of the messenger”. The Samaritan took a handful of dirt from the footprint of the horse and cast it into the fire, saying, “‘Be a calf, in the flesh, that moos, and it [the calf] was for sorrow and fitna”.
This story, absent in the biblical narrative, speaks of an unidentified messenger whose horse’s hoof print had power to create a calf. The Qur’ān does not specifically identify the messenger, but, since he had such an impact, the exegetes state that he is Jibrīl. Al-Zamakhsharī justifies such a notion:
When it was time to go to the mountain, Allah sent Jibrīl to Moses riding Hayzūm, the horse of life, to take him. The Samaritan saw him and said, “There is a reason for this,” so he grasped a handful of the dirt where he stepped. When Moses asked him about his story, he [the Samaritan] said, “I grasped from the footprint of the horse that was sent to you on the day when the appointed time has come.” He [the Samaritan] might not have known that it was Jibrīl.
It is not possible to connect this story to any of the known legends. It is probable that Muhammad learned the biblical story of the golden calf in a distorted form and needed to fill in the blanks in the story he received, so he added this detail of the Samaritan. (Compare with the previous critical analysis of Q 20.85-88).
