Al-Baqarah 2:62

The verse

2:62
Lo! Those who believe (in that which is revealed unto thee, Muhammad), and those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans - whoever believeth in Allah and the Last Day and doeth right - surely their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

This verse puts the Jews, Christians, Sabaeans, and Muslims into one group (the believers in Allah) and promises them their reward at the end of time (Q 2.62). Another verse, Q 5.69, repeats this promise word for word. However, if we continue to read Q 5, we find that the Qur’ān accuses the Christians of blasphemy and threatens them with hellfire (Q 5.72-73). In another verse, the circle of those who are bound for hellfire becomes even larger, including all who do not embrace Islām: “Whosoever craves other than Islām for a religion, it shall surely not be accepted from him, and he shall, in the next world, be of those who lose” (Q 3.85).

Question: What then is the destiny of the Jews, Christians, and Sabaeans, according to the Qur’ān: paradise or hellfire?
