Maryam 19:63
The verse
Such is the Garden which We cause the devout among Our bondmen to inherit. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse promises al-Janna (“Paradise”) to the pious worshippers, “our servants who are pious.”
Question: How can there be a pious worshipper and a worshipper who is not pious?
Though the Islamic commentaries ignore this issue, there is one opinion mentioned in al-Qurţubī’s Tafsīr that attempts to resolve this issue. This opinion states that words are out of order in this verse. The expression roughly means “to those who are pious of our servants”.
Wouldn’t it have been more accurate if the verse had been stated in this way, as suggested by al-Qurţubī, from the beginning?
