Maryam 19:26
The verse
So eat and drink and be consoled. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the Beneficent, and may not speak this day to any mortal. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse states that Mary was asked to say that she vowed to fast. Muslim exegetes agree that the intended fast is silence. For this reason, some of the readers read the word as samtan (“silence”). Some also read it as sawman samtan (“a fast of silence”).
The problem of fasting from talking yet saying that she had taken a vow of silence was solved by the exegetes, who state that she was silent but indicated her fast by pointing with her head. Others state that Mary vowed to fast but fulfilled it after a group from among her people had visited her and she told them that she “vowed to the Merciful One a fast”. Without these two suggestions, it is hard for the reader to imagine silence and speech simultaneously. In fact, having two such suggestions for the time she commenced her fast only adds to the series of unclear details in the Qur’ān that require the estimations and suppositions of Islamic scholars.
