Maryam 19:24
The verse
Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee, — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
Muslim exegetes disagree concerning the identity of the one who “called to her”: was it Jesus or Jibrīl? Some hold that it was Jibrīl and claim that “from beneath her'' means between her hands. Others state that it was Jesus and that he called to her “from beneath her'' after she gave birth to him.
This division over the identity of the person who called Mary also leads to a disagreement regarding the meaning of “beneath her.” Those who state that the speaker was Jesus claim this phrase is prepositional and means “under Mary.” Those who state that the speaker was Jibrīl interpreted “beneath her'' to mean from under the palm tree. The exegetes also debate the meaning of the word sarīyan (Palmer trans. “stream”):
The term sarīyan means a river or stream from which people drink. Some exegetes state that sarīyan means “stream” in Syriac, while others hold that the word means “stream” in the Nabataean language.
The word sarīyan refers to Jesus himself. Those who hold this view state that the word could not refer to a river because “if it was a river, it would have been beside her. The river would not be under her”. They hold that the noun comes from al-sarā, which means “a noble person”.
Therefore, this verse contains several unknowable elements:
Who is speaking? Jesus or Jibrīl?
From where does the speaker call out? Under Mary or under the palm tree?
What is sarīyan? A river or Jesus?
Question: Where is the clarity in the Qur’ānic text?
