Maryam 19:17
The verse
And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
The verse states that Allah sent his “spirit” to Mary. Muslim exegetes explain that the spirit is Jibrīl, who appeared to her as a human. It is said that Jibrīl is called the “spirit” “figuratively, out of love for him”. On the other hand, others regard the “spirit” to be Jesus, “because Allah created the spirits before the bodies, so he put the spirit in the body of Jesus, who was created inside her [Mary]”.
Most exegetes lean towards the opinion that the “spirit” is Jibrīl, relying on Q 26.193-194: “the Faithful Spirit came down with it upon thy heart, that thou shouldst be of those who warn.”
This division in interpretation reflects the confusion of the exegetes regarding the intended identity of this spirit. Part of the problem with the minority’s interpretation may be that its view (the spirit of Allah as Jesus) is too similar to the Christian view regarding Jesus. This discomforting similarity has pushed most commentators to favor Jibrīl as the one intended by the term, “spirit.”
This confusion among the exegetes again illustrates that the Qur’ānic text is ambiguous and can have many different interpretations.
