At-Taubah 9:55

The verse

9:55
So let not their riches nor their children please thee (O Muhammad). Allah thereby intendeth but to punish them in the life of the world and that their souls shall pass away while they are disbelievers. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

How could wealth and children be instruments of torture in life, according to this

verse, while the Qur’ān itself mentions in another verse (Q 18.46), “Wealth and children

are an adornment of the life of this world”?

Interpreters and linguists implicitly acknowledge this conflict. For this reason, a

group of them have said that the verse should be read, “Do not admire their money or

their children in this life, but Allah wants to punish them with these in the afterlife”.

Al-T. abarī writes, “Some said: Muhammad, do not admire the wealth of those hypocrites or their children in this life, but Allah wants to use them for their torture

in the afterlife”. This interpretation denotes advancement of one event and delay of

another. Ibn ‘Abbās supports this interpretation.

Indeed, since the verse does not contain any delay or advancement of events and

since the term afterlife is not present in the verse but assumed by the interpreters, the

commentators have drifted from the right path. For this reason, the grammar specialists

state the verse has an omitted phrase, as if to say, “But Allah wants to dictate to them

in it to torment them [our emphasis]”.

So where is the eloquence, when we have to refer to interpretations to know of the omissions and the meaning of the verse?.
