Al-A‘rāf 7:16
The verse
He said: Now, because Thou hast sent me astray, verily I shall lurk in ambush for them on Thy Right Path. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
After Satan was ordered to leave al-Janna, he accused Allah of being the one who
tempted him: “I will repel the sons of Adam from worshipping and obeying You; I will
lure them as You lured me and mislead them as You misled me.”
This verse makes Allah the inciter of Satan’s deviant behavior, because it neither
replies to Satan’s accusation, nor does it refute the charge that Allah lured him.
The passage also reiterates other verses from the Qur’ān in which Allah appears to
make evil appealing to people. (See the discussion concerning this issue in Q 3.14,
and compare it with Q 6.108).
