Al-A‘rāf 7:13
The verse
He said: Then go down hence! It is not for thee to show pride here, so go forth! Lo! thou art of those degraded. — Marmaduke Pickthall
The issue
In this verse, Allah orders Satan to leave heaven, for he is not allowed to exalt himself
there, as if the passage implies that it is allowable for Satan to exalt himself on earth.
Al-T. abarī responded to this ambiguity:
[T]he meaning of this is the opposite of what you arrived at. What is
meant is “descend from [get out of] al-Janna [Islāmic paradise], for
there is no dwelling in al-Janna for anyone who exalts himself above
the will of Allah, but other places besides al-Janna can be dwelt by
both the one who exalts oneself above Allah’s will and those who are
obedient to his will.
Al-T. abarī’s explanation does not coincide with the logic of the verse, which shows us
that Allah prohibited exaltation in a specific place—only al-Janna—while leaving
the act as allowable in other locations.
