Al-An‘ām 6:164

The verse

6:164
Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed. — Marmaduke Pickthall

The issue

This verse mentions that every human who is an evildoer will endure the consequences

of his own deeds and that no person will be punished on another’s behalf: “...but no

soul shall earn aught save against itself; nor shall one bearing a burden bear the burden of another...” (Q 6.164).

However, another verse states that the transgressors will endure the consequences of

their own deeds in full, as well as bearing the weight of some of the transgressions of

those who followed and obeyed them: “Let them bear the burden of their sins entirely on

the resurrection day [Day of Judgment], and some of the burdens of those whom they led astray without knowledge...” (Q 16.25).

Additionally, a third verse threatens that the transgressors will bear both their own

burdens and the burdens of others: “But they shall surely bear their own burdens, and burdens with their burdens...” (Q 29.13).
